Historical novels set in Wisconsin

Books 1-3

Historical novels set in the Northwoods of Wisconsin by Wisconsin author Naomi Musch include The Deepest Sigh, The Softest Breath, and Mist O’er the Voyageur. The first two are set in the early 1900s. The last is set in Montreal and the wild frontier in the early 1800s. In Deepest Sigh, Marilla marries a man who doesn’t love her. I thought he was a big jerk, but the story of redemption is interesting and well worth your time reading. The Softest Breath is the story of a singer, Gwen, who wants to change her life but has some bullies pursuing her. It’s during Prohibition and the Mafia-linked bad guys worry the reader as she looks to see how Gwen is going to get out of this mess.  In Mist O’er the Voyageur, Brigitte flees a rich and cruel man who intends to marry her by joining voyageurs. She must conceal the fact that she is a woman as they hike and canoe untamed Canada to trading posts inland. It is also the story of an honorable man who must protect her once her identity becomes known.

Novels of mystery, romance

Books 4 & 5

Suzanne J. Bratcher wrote these exciting mysteries: The Copper Box and The Silver Lode. I had fun trying to figure out who the bad guys were. In the first, someone pretends to be a ghost to scare Marty from her grandmother’s home, but why is this happening and what is this person seeking? In the second, a college student seeks help from his professor to find the murderer of a lost relative, but someone doesn’t want them to find the truth.

Book 6

Karin Beery wrote Practically Married, an interesting story about Ashley who agrees to marry a complete stranger only to learn getting to the altar is going to be a bit more complicated than she imagined.

Book 7

Brenda S. Anderson’s A Beautiful Mess tells the story of a woman who learns she has custody of her ex-husband’s love child, the cause of her divorce, during the critical start-up of her new business. This story is about forgiveness and starting fresh.

Book 8

For those who love Amish romances, Amy Clipston’s The Bake Shop is a good story about forgiveness. Christiana sets up shop next to a rather grumpy neighbor, Jeff. She determines to befriend him and find out why he’s so sad and angry.

Historical romance

Book 9

I loved The Centurion’s Wife by Davis Bunn and Janette Oke. This story is set after the crucifixion of Christ. Leah resists an arranged marriage to a Roman centurion, but there is more to this man than she could ever imagine. A page turner. One of my favorites. It is the first in a series, but they can all stand alone.

Humor and mystery

Book 10

Pocket Change by Debbie Archer is a mystery chocked full of humor. I picked up this book because Debbie and I belonged to the same critique group for a time, and I wanted to read how her story turned out. I thought I was getting a middle-grade novel, but it is a novel for women. If you desire to read a novel that will bring unexpected bursts of laughter, check out this book and see if you can determine who murdered the contractor. I appreciate her wonderful character descriptions and felt like I watched a close-knit, small town in action. She has some interesting people indeed. This cleverly written mystery will keep you guessing about who murdered the contractor right up to the exciting end. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a novel that made me laugh so often. It was a fun book.
