Breastfeeding saves money
Expenses add up with a new baby, but one way to save money is to breastfeed your baby. Breastfeeding saves money, but it also provides other benefits for you and your baby.
There’s no need to spend money on formula and all the bottle feeding paraphernalia. Of course, you will still want a few bottles for expressing milk for others to feed the baby, or for juice later; although introducing juice might be something you want to introduce in the sippy cup. I nursed my babies for at least one year.
If you work outside the home, your nursing schedule may include expressing milk to freeze for your babysitter or day care provider to use. It’s a little extra work, but I did this with my oldest child.
Benefits of breastfeeding
Nursing provides plenty of special, close times with your baby. Physical skin to skin contact helps your baby to thrive because your baby feels safe, warm, secure, and loved. You won’t have to worry about your baby failing to thrive.
Breastfeeding means your milk is safe and doesn’t require any food preparation. Whenever your baby is hungry, your body provides what is needed. You needn’t worry about how much to make. Your miraculous body already supplies what is needed. You simply need a comfortable and private spot. A blanket draped over your shoulder can provide necessary privacy if you aren’t home. You can use this time to talk, sing, or read with your baby. Your baby loves to hear your voice and watch you. You’ll love the tiny fingers gripping your own finger.
Studies show that the benefits of breastfeeding your babies include protecting them from getting diseases and sicknesses, allergies, and even developing obesity. Because breast milk is so nutritious, it keeps your baby healthier. Some studies say that breastfed babies do better on intellectual testing also.
A benefit I loved for myself was that breastfeeding helps slim you down post pregnancy. You may burn 450-700 calories per day breastfeeding. When you cease nursing, however, remember to change your eating habits accordingly or the weight packs on.
Lactation consultants helpful
So if you are expecting a baby, I recommend talking with your pediatrician and researching it some more. It is an option you’ll never regret because of the precious time spent with your baby. Bonding is always most important, of course, though saving money is a bonus.
It may take a bit of time to learn. Nurses specializing in breastfeeding help you. I met my lactation consultant in the hospital after a caesarean birth, but you should speak up and ask about finding one if you have questions or concerns. With a little patience, you will get the hang of it.
