Proverbs 31 woman is a wife of noble character.

Noble means of superior quality or kind, excellent, of an exalted moral character, honorable. A definition of character is moral or ethical strength. It can also be a formal written statement as to competency and dependability given by an employer to a former employee; a recommendation.

As homeschoolers, we choose to honor the Lord through the textbooks we use, the books we read, the music we listen to, and the programming we watch. We strive to honor God first and by doing so, we honor our spouses and children, friends and neighbors, and people we meet while out and about. Since we work to please God, we do our best on the tasks we tackle. This makes us dependable and honorable.

She is worth far more than rubies.

Because she is always busy working for her family and helping others, she is priceless, irreplaceable.

The homeschooling parent fits this definition too. Not only does she do household chores such as laundry, cooking, cleaning, bill paying, gardening, shopping, and more, she educates the children, another full-time job. In educating the children, she studies curriculum options and chooses carefully; prepares daily lesson plans and implements them; teaches all the school subjects and tracks progress; overcomes challenges with students in learning; prays a lot. A mom who homeschools her children invests priceless, irreplaceable hours into nurturing souls and minds. Her earthly pay may not be monetary, but her rewards are immeasurable.

Her husband has full confidence in her. . .

Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. Because of her high moral character and dependability, her husband knows that she will strive to bring honor to all that she does which reflects on him. Just as a good employee always makes the boss look good, so a good wife always makes her husband look good. She also speaks positive things about her husband to him and to others.

While I homeschooled, I sometimes fell into doubt or fear over perceived inadequacies. My focus fell from the face of God to my own self. Of course, I failed at many things, but we all do. Yet, God provided because He knows a mother’s heart. Have confidence that God directs your path and walks with you in your work.

Look to do good and trust God and yourself. As you strive to honor God and reflect Him to your family, blessings follow. Speak positive and concentrate on what is going right.

People respect our Proverbs 31 woman’s confidence. Neither does she fear the future. We, too, do not need to fear the future. Our confidence in Christ bolsters us onward.

She is a wise businesswoman

In verses 13-19, we learn that she selects fine materials to weave fine linen, that she works eagerly, and that she is willing to go far to find food for her family. The Proverbs 31 woman works from before dawn until it is dark, burning the candle late into the night, so that everyone in her household has enough to eat. As any smart businesswoman, she shows good judgment by considering before she buys, in this case, property which she plants into a vineyard. She is active mentally and physically throughout the day.

Most homeschoolers live on one income, so they spend their money wisely, shopping for good deals. We evaluate our options and balance needs with wants. We sacrifice for the greater long-term good.

Some raise their own food through gardens and livestock.

With all the work in a day, homeschoolers burn the candle at both ends too.

Proverbs 31 woman helps the needy

Next, we see that she is generous to the poor, helpful to the needy, and prepared. Thanks to her, she has nice, warm clothes and bed coverings for herself and her family.

Because we lived on one income, we didn’t spend huge amounts of money on clothes, but we had nice clothes for when needed. People can dress well by selecting purchases with forethought. Also, dressing with dignity doesn’t mean chasing the latest fashions. Poise and respect add grace to appearance. Beauty shines in how we conduct ourselves.

The Proverbs 31 woman sells linen garments and sashes to others. Talented homeschool seamstresses do sew for themselves and sell their wares at craft fairs or personal businesses, but I am not among them. I am glad that I don’t have to make my family’s clothing because I’d fail miserably in more ways than one. 

Homeschoolers open their homes to other homeschool families for mutual studies and play dates. Sometimes we offer Bible studies. Our lived-in homes welcome visitors with our love more than our prestige. Guests remember kindness.

As Christians, we give to charities and those in need also. We often volunteer at church, library, school, and community events.

Proverbs 31 woman is not a busybody

I see the Proverbs 31 woman as wise, loving, watches her tongue, gives faithful instruction, and encourages. She watches over her own affairs at home and is not idle. Because of all this, her children call her blessed and her husband praises her. Many do noble things, but she surpasses or exceeds them.

We do well to mind our own affairs and stay away from gossip too. Juggling all the balls in our own lives keep us plenty busy from falling into traps of idleness.

Because the Proverbs 31 woman is a God-fearing gal, I know that she honored the Sabbath by resting. We all need a day off and a vacation now and then to rejuvenate ourselves so we don’t burn out. Please keep balance in your life so you don’t work all the time.

Her beauty comes through her faith

Finally in verses 30-31, we learn that she fears the Lord. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”

I don’t think she was perfect because none of us are, but I think she would have been a wonderful friend to have.

Honor comes by working hard and honoring God and others. Through parenting and homeschooling, many women follow in the Proverb’s 31 woman’s footsteps. They just might not see it.
